There are a total of 8 Wadden Islands. However, only 5 of these are inhabited, namely Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog.

Texel is the best known of the Dutch Wadden Islands. It is the largest island of the five, with a land area of about 162 km². The island is 20 km long and 8 km wide and is about 20 minutes by boat from Den Helder.
About 13,500 people live on the island, spread over the 7 villages.
